Beckenham

Conservative Councillors in Beckenham, Michael Tickner and Stephen Wells, have secured the discussion of an important policy document on Beckenham High Street at the Council’s Development Control Committee on Tuesday 2nd November.

In May this year a Design Guide on Beckenham Shop Fronts was produced by John Parker of The Beckenham Society ably assisted by David Wood and Colin Hughes. The guide was a project initiated by the Beckenham Town Centre Team and supported by Beckenham Business Association and residents’ associations from Copers Cope Area, West Beckenham and Langley Park.

Michael and Stephen, who both represent Copers Cope Ward, have been working hard to convince colleagues to vote in favour of the proposals. Michael, who oversaw the public realm works in Beckenham High Street two years ago, will also speak in favour of the plans at the committee meeting on Tuesday.

Michael said:

“This is a very authoritative design guide for the High Street Conservation Area which will ensure the existing amenity of the High Street is maintained. The framework will ensure a sensitive approach to shop front design and signage, by offering planning guidance on installing new and altering existing shop fronts as well as signage, canopies and security features.”

Stephen added:

“We very much hope our colleagues will adopt this Guide. Beckenham High Street has been a Conservation Area since 2015 and adoption of this Guide will ensure the unique character of Beckenham High Street can be retained. Anyone who uses the High Street, by day or night can feel it’s ‘buzz’, we very much agree with The Beckenham Society in wanting to see Beckenham ‘as one of suburban London’s most outstanding High Streets’.

We will let you know on Wednesday the result of the discussion on Tuesday night.”
