Beckenham Conservatives: Allotments Not for Sale

Beckenham Conservatives have launched a campaign to protect our much-loved allotments from the threat of being sold off under a Labour council.

Allotments are far more than patches of land. They are places where residents of all ages come together, grow food, share skills and enjoy the outdoors. Wickham Road Allotments is a shining example, a thriving community space that has been cared for by local people for generations. It is exactly these kinds of spaces that we are determined to safeguard.

Nationally, Labour’s Deputy Leader Angela Rayner has made no secret of the fact that Labour councils will look to “sweat the assets” they own, which means selling off community land and property to plug financial gaps. This raises genuine concerns for treasured green spaces, such as our allotments. Residents deserve to know that under a Labour-run council, these local community spaces could be put at risk.

Local Conservatives are absolutely clear: allotments are not for sale. We will always protect them for the benefit of the community. The campaign to safeguard our allotments is being led locally by Cllr Mike Tickner, Patrick Olliffe and Stephen Ayshford, who have each spoken out strongly on the importance of defending these spaces.

A new video, filmed with Cllr Tickner at Wickham Road Allotments, sets out why allotments matter so much to residents and underlines the threat they could face if Labour were in control of Bromley Council.

Local Conservatives have a strong track record of protecting community assets, listening to residents and preserving the character of our neighbourhoods. Allotments are an important part of our local heritage and a vital resource for future generations. That is why we are committed to keeping them safe and why we will never sell them off.
