Works to improve road safety at the Chinese Roundabout in Beckenham have now entered their final stage, with all traffic arms fully reopened.
Previously one of Bromley’s most accident-prone junctions, the roundabout saw frequent incidents due to excessive vehicle speeds and poor visibility on approach. These improvement works are addressing those issues directly, narrowing entry points to slow traffic, improving sight lines, and introducing new, much-needed pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes to make the roundabout safer for all users.
Councillor Adam Grant (Shortlands & Park Langley) has secured additional improvements, including a comprehensive planting scheme to enhance the public realm, and is pushing for the reinstatement of the iconic Chinese lanterns missing from the former garage site. Adam has also worked closely with local businesses to minimise disruption and preserve access to parking outside nearby shops.
Final resurfacing works are scheduled for early August and will take place overnight to reduce daytime disruption.
Adam said:
“I’m pleased to see this major safety upgrade nearing completion and want to thank residents and local businesses for their patience throughout. While the works have been disruptive, the long-term benefit is clear: a significantly safer, more efficient roundabout at one of the borough’s busiest junctions.
We’ve worked hard to limit disruption, but with over 30,000 vehicle movements a day, some inconvenience was unavoidable. Once complete, this project will deliver a much-improved and, more importantly, safer roundabout.
This scheme is a credit to Bromley’s Highways team — particularly the engineers and officers who work tirelessly to deliver a safer, better-connected borough.”
