Network Rail Unveil Long-Awaited Shortlands Lift Timetable

Shortlands Station

Network Rail have announced the timetable for the installation of lifts at Shortlands Railway Station. This follows years of campaigning from residents, local Councillors and the Member of Parliament.

Funding for the lifts were first agreed by the Conservative-led Government in 2013 under the ‘Access for All’ funding to improve accessibility on the railway. However, feasibility studies have had to take place and plans submitted to Bromley Council’s planning department. Local Conservative Councillors and the Member of Parliament have frequently raised the slow progress with Network Rail.

Network Rail have now written to residents in Shortlands setting out the timetable for the works. These are expected to start in January 2024 and complete by the spring of 2025. Network Rail will be holding an information session on the works on Monday 18th December between 1700-1900 at the station ticket office.

Works will be taking place on the following dates, which could lead to disruption to services. Rail Operators will publish details of any disruption closer to the time.

2024:

  • 11th and 12th February for making changes to the platforms and installation of hoardings.
  • 29th April to 24th May to install the steelwork for the lift and footbridge.
  • 12th and 13th May for installing the steel work that will form the lifts to the footbridge.
  • 10th June to 16th August to complete brickwork, cladding and electrical works.
  • 20th and 21st October for resurfacing the platforms.

2025:

  • 9th and 10th February as a contingency date for final works.
  • 12th February to remove spoils from the platforms.

Welcoming the news, local Councillor Felicity Bainbridge commented:

“The lifts at Shortlands are long overdue so we are pleased to see a timetable now being published and time set aside for the upcoming information session. Spring 2025 is longer than most people had expected so as local Councillors we will continue to work with our MP to press Network Rail to deliver these lifts as soon as possible”.
