Cllr Christine Harris

Kelsey & Eden Park Ward Councillor, Christine Harris, has welcomed the return of the Bowie Beckenham Oddity event at Croydon Road Recreation Ground. The event, which raises funds towards the upkeep of the Grade II listed bandstand used by David Bowie in 1969, returned on Saturday 14th August nearly two years after the last event.

The bandstand was given Grade II listed status in 2019 and was used by David Bowie in 1969 to perform at a concert he jointly organised shortly after the release of his first hit single 'Space Oddity'.

Christine, who represents Kelsey & Eden Park Ward which covers the recreation ground, also helped out as a volunteer at the event, where she was a steward for the day.

Christine said:

"I am extremely happy that this event was able to take place again this year. It is a great way of celebrating one of Beckenham's most famous son's. This event is an important celebration of David Bowie's impact on the musical world and it all started here in Beckenham!"
